JOINT VENTURE: SNEHASADAN & ST. JOSEPH'S TECHNICAL INSTITUTE, PUNE

STUDENTS OF TECHNICAL: TOPIC OF DISCUSSION:

"ON THE THRESHOLD OF ACTIVE LIFE"

Indian Culture is the Beautiful Brew of Commingling of Various Cultural Currents ’
‘Look at each other as human beings,’ Said   the Leading Social Activist Professor Sharad Javadekar.
Resource Person: Professor Sharad Javadekar
In view of the Guru Paurnima/Teacher’s Day Snehasadan-Inter Faith Dialogue Institute & St. Joseph’s Technical Institute jointly organised half a day’s seminar for the Technical Students. While speaking to the students and the Staff on the topic, “On the Threshould of Active Life,” Prof. Javadekar beckoned all to “look at each other as human beings and shun discrimination.”

The program began with Fr. Subhash Tribhuvan, the director of the Technical Institute awarding certificates & prizes to the excellent students through Prof. Javadekar, Sharad. After having introduced the main speaker to the audience packed hall the Director invited the professor to speak
Professor Sharad Javadekar

Popularly known as Professor Javadekar said, ‘The world today is called a global village with a better communication through the hi-tech media connecting people the world over at a click of a mobile switch, while our neighbours are unknown to us. ‘Here the people have separated even the gods of high caste from the gods of low caste people. High caste gods are handsome looking, while the low caste gods are ugly looking and just saffron painted stones. On the basis of castes, creeds, languages, territories and even ideologies, we are creating a rift between various communities’ he pointed out. ‘However, India is the intermingling of many different cultural streams like Aryans, the Mongols, Moghuls, the Portuguese, and later still the British. This is the real rich and all-accommodative culture of India,’ He further opine. He said, ‘In order to honour a great personality like King Shivaji, people do not have to denigrate some other community. In fact Shivaji, a Hindu King and Aurangzeb, a Muslim emperor battled against each other for the territorial expansion and not on the basis of religion.’ They both had several Muslim and Hindu experts on important posts in their kingdoms respectively. Therefore, we, the ordinary people need to be careful against the poison of disunity in the country.

DISCOURCES ON THE CONCEPT OF GURU

‘In today’s Teacher-Student Relationship Value system needs to be reinstated’ Agreed all the speakers.

Pune: Sept. 10: On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, a seminar was jointly organised by Snehasadan, Institute for the Study of Religion and St. Vincent’s Night College of Commerce in the Campus of the College.

Dr. Anil Adsule delivering his Keynote address at the outset
Fr. James Selvaraj, SJ the manager and the Professor of the College welcomed all the students, staff and, invited the dignitaries to light the lamp. After he introduced the guest speakers Mr. Abhay Tilak, Shri Zia A. Khan and Fr. Learoy Rodrigues, SJ for this joint Seminar on the topic of ‘GURU’, Fr. Anil introduced the topic of the day and invited the speakers to enlighten all on the same.

Fr. james Selvaraj, SJ the Pune Jesuit Father, the manager of the College
Welcomes and introduces the speakers of the seminar.
Mr. Abhay Tilak said, ‘Being a student is a profession today. But to be a disciple is an attribute, a quality, a disposition of a person. You may be a student without being a disciple. Ne may be a very good disciple, highly acclaimed one without being a formally called or educated student. The guru being a Sanskrit word means, the one who eradicates the darkness of ignorance. Moreover, this word has several dimensions-temporal, spiritual, linguistic and other.’

Fr. Learoy Rodrigues, SJ delivering his disocurse
Mr. Zia a Khan, one time Ustad of wrestling, a well-studied personality in Sufism, spoke of the relationship between Shagird or student and the Ustad-Master. In this he said, ‘Today’s students ask for education because they pay the money to the teacher. Hence, there is not real relationship of a student with the master or teacher. The whole value system has gone topsy-turvy. That has rendered a transactional character to the noble work like teaching.’

Shree Abhay Tilak, delivering his discourse.
‘With the neghbouring kingdoms flaunting their tradition of Guru-shishya, the Jews too unearthed their tradition of Rabbi-student relationship,’ said Fr. Learoy Rodrigues, SJ.  He began with a story of a Guru who told his disciples that when one saw another human being as his or her brother and sister, saw pain and suffering in the eyes of the other human beings, then he or she could distinguish between morning and night.’ He further said, ‘Jesus is a different Guru. He washed his disciples’ feet and then told them that as he their master has washed their feet, they should also do the same with each other.’
Shree Zia Ahmed Khan delivering his speech

FR. James Selvaraj, SJ and the Principal of the College both felicitated the speakers and the director of Snehasadan with bouquets of flowers and shawls while other Jesuit guests Fr. Theo de Sales and Fr. Tony Sequeira too were present along with Fr. Philip Parmar of Delhi diocese.  The students of the college Br.
